On October 16th 1859, John Brown led a crew of 21 men into the small Virginia town of Harpers Ferry. This band of misfits had a very clear goal: free the enslaved and start a rebellion. Brown’s plan quickly dissolved leading to mass violence and the death of almost all of his men, including two of his own sons.  Although the raid was a tragic failure, it ignited the nation’s contempt for slavery and fueled the beginning of the Civil War.
